On 27 May 2026, HIAS+JCORE hosted an important webinar exploring the controversial ‘Danish model’.
We were joined by expert speakers Professor Jens Vedsted-Hansen (Professor of Law at the University of Aarhus, Denmark), Dr Mihnea Cuibus (Researcher at The Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford), and Dorte Smed (Senior Legal Advisor at the Danish Refugee Council).
Our panel explored how this policy approach, which has been condemned for increasing insecurity for refugees and weakening social cohesion, has been implemented and impacted people in Denmark.
Our experts also considered how the ‘Danish model’ is influencing policy in the UK. With Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood having recently introduced major restrictions to refugee protection, including scrapping permanent refugee status and replacing it with 30-month temporary protection, such discussions are hugely timely.
